Michael Martin SHIRK, born near Waynesburg, Pa., Sept. 27, 1840; Aug. 19, 1862, enl. Co. K, 15th Pa. Cav.; married Oct. 13, 1864, Mary Ann MONTGOMERY, also a native of Green Co., Pa.

About 1870 they came to Iowa, locating on a farm three miles north of Fairfield. Later he lived in Fairfield for a time, when he bought a farm two miles east of Batavia, but for the past 20 years has lived in Batavia. Wife died Feb. 12, 1910.

Five children. The oldest died in Birmingham, Ala., Oct. 6, 1912. Arthur, the second son, died in Chicago Aug. 30, 1901. Their only daughter, Bertha BLOSSER died Dec. 20, 1898, when her only son Roy was only 2 1/2 months old. The third son, Daniel, lives near Birmingham, Iowa, and the youngest son, Charles, lives in Ft. Dodge, Iowa. Mason.
