Page 1, Column 4BATAVIA MAN USES POISON TO END LIFE
A Batavia man died enroute to the Jefferson county hospital last night after he had taken poison in an old barn at the southeast edge of Batavia. He was found soon after he took carbolic acid and strychnine, but died before arriving in Fairfield.
The man is Donald PEEBLER, 48, life-long resident of the Batavia community. Coroner Jack Raymond and Sheriff Thomas Howell were at the hospital when the car bringing PEEBLER to Fairfield arrived, but he had died enroute. the officers termed his death a suicide.
Earlier in the evening, PEEBLER called at the Gifford Campbell residence in Batavia and left a package. He told Mr. Campbell not to open it until morning.
After PEEBLER left, Mr. Campbell became suspicious and opened the package. It contained a note saying he was going to take his own life, and clothes in which he requested to be buried.
Mr. Campbell called the town marshal, Fred Fisher, and they traced PEEBLER to the old barn. They found him inside, but he had taken the poison. The men told officers he was still conscious and told them to leave, that he wanted to die.
They summoned Dr. Baldridge, and called county officers saying they were bringing PEEBLER to Fairfield. He died before arriving at the hospital shortly before midnight. Coroner Raymond said there would be no inquest.
