WOMAN DIES AT BATAVIA

Mrs. Elizabeth ALLEN McELDERRY suffered extended illness

Mrs. Elizabeth ALLEN McELDERRY 86, died Christmas day at 10:15 p.m. in her home two and a half miles northwest of Batavia. She had been ill for the past six months and seriously ill for the last 10 days.

She was born July 30, 1855 in Dayton, O. She was married to John McELDERRY in 1880 and had resided in the same home for the past 40 years. She is survived by her husband, one daughter Mrs. Myrtle WHITE of Cedar Rapids; one son, Roll McELDERRY of Batavia; one brother, George GLAZE of Ottumwa. One daughter preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Campbell funeral home in Batavia. Rev. Glenn Carr will officiate. Burial will be in the Batavia cemetery.

*Transcribed for genealogy purposes; I have no relation to the person(s).

Note: Her maiden name according to the obituary appears to have been ALLEN, however in the 1925 Iowa State Census she lists her father with the surname GLAYS. Her middle initial is noted as 'E.' on her gravestone and it's not clear where ALLEN comes in. She was married to John W. McELDERRY on October 7, 1880, per Jefferson County marriage records, the first marriage for both, and her middle name is shown as Ellen. I suspect ALLEN is simply a misunderstanding, and should be Ellen. -Admin.
