BATAVIA. Ia. -- Burial services were held in the Batavia cemetery for Mrs. Nora Clair McCREERY, 64, former well known resident of the Batavia community who died Friday at the Ottumwa hospital.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Johnson funeral chapel in Ottumwa with the Rev. Ellsworth Walker in charge.

Nora Clair McCREERY was born May 23, 1899, at Batavia, daughter of Frank and Rebecca CURRAY WHITMORE. She spent most of her youth in Batavia and in August, 1920, was married to Orville McCREERY.

They moved to Belknap where they operated the McCREERY grocery for 21 years. They moved back to Batavia where they operated another grocery. Orville McCREERY died in November, 1958.

A year later Mrs. McCREERY moved to Ottumwa. She was a member of the Batavia Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Louis HARBOUR (sic - Helen Louise McCREERY HARBOUR); two granddaughters; two brothers, Will L. WHITMORE, Fairfield, and John B. WHITMORE, Batavia; a sister Mrs. May WHITMORE, Batavia. Survivors also two cousins, Mrs. Fred NEIBERT and Mrs. Carrie BAKER, both of Fairfield.

In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by one sister and one brother.

Note: Originally an abbreviated version of the above obituary was also posted to the Davis and Wapello Counties' Obituaries boards. Since then the obituary has been transcribed in its entirety (and the above text edited) without editing the other counties' entries.

In addition, the obituary below has an incorrect name for one of Nora's granddaughters; "Louise and Caron" should be "Rebecca and Caron", per Rebecca's daughter Teresa.

Mrs. Nora McCREERY

Mrs. Nora Clair McCREERY, 64, of 312 Hackworth, died Friday at 4:10 p.m. at Ottumwa Hospital where she had been a patient for two weeks following surgery.

She was born May 23, 1899, at Batavia, the daughter of Frank and Rebecca CURRAY WHITMORE. She spent most of her youth in Batavia and in August 1920 was married to Orville McCREERY.

Shortly after they were married they moved to Belknap, where they operated the McCreery Grocery for 21 years. They then moved back to Batavia, where they operated another grocery. Mr. McCREERY died in November 1958. A year later she moved to Ottumwa.

Mrs. McCREERY was a member of the Batavia Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Louis HARBOUR (sic - Helen Louise McCREERY HARBOUR) and two granddaughters, Louise and Caron HARBOUR, all of Ottumwa; two brothers, Will L. WHITMORE of Fairfield and John B. WHITMORE of near Batavia; and a sister, Miss May WHITMORE of Batavia. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Bessie DAILEY, and a brother, Ray WHITMORE.

The service will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ellsworth Walker, pastor of Wesley Methodist Church, in Ottumwa, officiating. Burial will be in Batavia Cemetery.
