Ila Lois Heckenberg, 83, of Sunnybrook Assisted Living in Fairfield, died Sunday, Jan. 1, 2006, at Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield.

A service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Fairfield, with the Rev. Jim Wotherspoon officiating. Burial will be in Lockridge Cemetery.

A family visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Behner Funeral home in Fairfield. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church. Online condolences may be left at www.behnerfh.com.

Mrs. Heckenberg was born Feb. 2, 1922, in Baring, Mo., the daughter of Henry and Jesse Couch Atwater. She married Orval S. Heckenberg Oct. 3, 1945, in Galesburg, Ill. He died Oct. 21, 2001 in Fairfield.

Mrs. Heckenberg and her husband were residents of Fairfield for more than 50 years. She was employed at Harper Brush Works, King's Super Value and as a police dispatcher at the Jefferson County Law Center.

Mrs. Heckenberg was a member of First Baptist Church, as well as the American Baptist Women Ministries and the Maxine Bates Circle.

Survivors include her children, Dick and wife Andrea of Vienna, Austria, Gene and wife Judith of Algonquin, Ill., Don and wife Amy of Burlington, and Renee and Tom of Richland; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, William Atwater of Memphis, Mo., and Hubert Atwater of Cheyenne, Wyo.; and one sister, Wilma Anderson of San Diego, Calif.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Twila Collier.
