Harold C. Derby, 87, of Richland, died at 12:10 a.m. Friday Dec. 30, 2005, at Parkview Manor Nursing Home in Wellman.

A service was held this morning at the Richland United Methodist Church in Richland, with the Rev. Kim Gates and the Rev. Harlan Van Voorst officiating. Burial with Military Honors by American Legion Post 504 will be at Richland Friends Cemetery.

Memorials to the Richland United Methodist Church or to Parkview Manor Nursing Home have been established.

Mr. Derby was born Sept. 7, 1918, near Richland, the son of Lewis and Stella Mae Lankford Derby. He married Peggy Clubb Feb. 25, 1948, in North English.

Mr. Derby lived all of his life in the Richland area and attended area schools. Mr. Derby farmed, kept dairy cattle, raised hogs and worked for McQuay-Perfex from 1972-1984 from which he retired. He and his wife also operated Derby Orchard. They moved to Richland in 1975 and he lived there until going to Parkview Manor, where he was a resident for the past three years.

Mr. Derby was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater and among other citations, he received the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Purple Heart Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters.

Mr. Derby was a member of the Richland Christian Church and later the Richland United Methodist Church and American Legion Post 504.

Survivors include his wife Peggy of Richland; two sons, Gary Derby and wife Rita of Marion and Terry Derby and wife Vicki of Fairfield; two daughters, Barbara Altenhofen and husband Leslie of Washington and Kathy Northup and husband Robert of Brighton; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Clois Talley of Fairfield and Mrs. Phyllis Fritchen of Ollie.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond Derby and twin brother Harlan Derby.
