Newton HUGHES, Merchant Over 50 Years, Dies

O. Newton HUGHES, 80, retired hardware merchant, died at 4:10 a.m. today at the Jefferson County Hospital.

He was stricken earlier at his home, 204 E. Burlington, and died a short time after his arrival at the hospital.

HUGHES retired in January, 1962, after being in the hardware business over 50 years.

He was presented the Estwing Gold Hammer in May, 1961, for his fifty years' service to the hardware industry. The presentation was made by the Estwing Manufacturing Co., Rockford, Ill.

HUGHES and his former partner, Glenn T. GRANT, sold their business to Howard Johnson in January, 1962. The firm, located on the south side of the square, had been known as Hughes and Grant since 1927.

"Newt" HUGHES as his many friends knew him went to work in a hardware store in 1910 operated by his father, the late B. B. HUGHES and Harvey Brown.

In 1913 he went to work for the late M. D. Rodibaugh at the location where the Johnson Hardware store is now located. Later, the late Walter Bean became part owner and the firm was known as Rodibaugh ad Bean.

In 1923 HUGHES and the late J.E. Cohagen bought out the former owners and it was named Cohagen and Hughes. Cohagen sold out to Glenn T. GRANT in 1927 and it was known as Hughes and Grant for 35 years.

O. Newton HUGHES was born Sept. 17, 1889, in Van Buren County near Stockport. He was the son of B. B. and Mary STONEBREAKER HUGHES.

He was reared and educated in Fairfield and attended Parsons College.

His marriage to Hazel GRANT took place April 15, 1914. She survives. HUGHES was a member of the United Methodist Church, was a 50-year Mason, and a member of the Elks.

In addition to his wife HUGHES is survived by one son, Milford E., Simsburg, Conn.; one daughter, Mrs. Kenneth EGGER, Kingsport, Tenn.; three grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Charles F. NUTT, Des Moines.

The body is at the Raymond Funeral Home where last rites are pending.

HUGHES Funeral To Be Saturday

Last rites will be Saturday for O.N. "Newt" HUGHES, retired Fairfield hardware merchant who died suddenly Thursday morning at the Jefferson County Hospital.

Services Saturday will be at 2 p.m. at the Raymond Funeral Home with the Rev. Wilson Hyde officiating. burial will be in Evergreen Cemetry (sic).

HUGHES was in the hardware business for over 50 years before his retirement.

NOTICE OF PROBATE OF WILL, OF APPOINTMENT OF EXECUTOR, AND NOTICE TO CREDITORS

In The District Court Of The State Of Iowa In And For Jefferson County

In The Matter Of The Estate Of O. N. HUGHES, Deceased.

To All Persons Interested In The Estate of O.N. HUGHES Deceased:

You are hereby notified that on the 7th day of August, 1970, the last will and testament of O. N. HUGHES deceased bearing date of the 13th day of April, 1961, was admitted to probate in the above named court and that Hazel G. HUGHES was appointed executor of said estate.

Notice is further given that any action to set aside said Will must be brought in the district court of said county within one year from the date of the second publication of this notice, or thereafter be forever barred.

Notice is further given that all persons indebted to said estate are requested to make immediate payment to the undersigned, and creditors having claims against said estate shall file them with the clerk of the above named district court, as provided by law, duly authenticated, for allowance; and unless so filed within six months from the second publication of this notice (unless otherwise allowed or paid) such claim shall thereafter be forever barred.
