Clarence M. "Swede" Vorhies, 93, of Fairfield, died at 3:25 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, at Nelson Nursing Home in Fairfield.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield, with the Rev. Marvin Robeck officiating. Burial will follow at Lockridge Cemetery.

Family visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Behner Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Augustana Lutheran Church of Lockridge or the Lockridge Cemetery Association. Online condolences may be sent to www.behnerfh.com.

Mr. Vorhies was born Jan. 1, 1912, northwest of Lockridge Township, the son of Marshall and Emma Johnson Vorhies. He married Doris Bottorff May 16, 1937, in Fairfield. She died Dec. 17, 1986.

Mr. Vorhies lived all of his life in the Lockridge area. He was employed at The Dexter Company for 40 years in the store room, material and handling.

Mr. Vorhies was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church.

He was a member of Fairfield Eagles Lodge #1927, Moose Lodge of Mount Pleasant #1003 and local union IAM #1292. He enjoyed dancing at the Eagles Lodge, and mowed the grass there for several years. He also enjoyed fishing with his Calcutta bamboo pole.

Survivors include three sons, Richard Vorhies and wife Patricia of Lockridge, Dean Vorhies of Mount Pleasant, and Kevin Vorhies and wife Linda of Hot Springs, Ark.; one brother, George Vorhies of Fairfield.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Harold Vorhies, Grant Vorhies and Lester Vorhies.

Hello Any and All friends of Mr. Clarence "Swede" Vorhies.
I am Kevin's wife and we live in Hot Springs, AR. I wanted to let you all know why Kevin and I did not attend his father's Memorial Service.
Kevin was diagnosed with CLL-Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia July-2004. He was a very sick man until about a week before Christmas 2004. Then Praise be to God, his appetite returned, all the infections cleared up and he was able to have the chemo treatments his Dr. had tried to start back in July. Kevin has been in remission since May..there is not a cure for this type of leukemia. Kevin had a ct chest scan 9/27 it showed an abnormality so he was scheduled to have a test on 11/10/2005, which he did, then see his cancer Dr. on 11/11/2005. Thank God the test came back negative...no new cancer..Kevin tells me it is a 10 hour drive from our home in Hot Springs, Ar. to Lockridge, Iowa so it is my prayer that his family and friends will know that it was due to Kevin's health and not disrespect that we were unable to attend Dad Vorhies' Memorial Service, Sincerely, Mrs. Kevin L.
