FairfieldLarry Phillip McINTIRE, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2024, at the Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield, Iowa, at the age of 82. Born on April 20, 1942, in the same close-knit community, Larry's life was a testament to his dedication to his family, his passion for his hobbies, his love for animals, and his commitment to his work.
Growing up in Fairfield, Larry was the beloved son of Robert W. and Daisy Mae PICKERING McINTIRE. During High School he worked at the Fairfield Bakery and Creamery. Larry graduated from Fairfield High School in 1960. On February 7, 1964, Larry married his soulmate, Linda Louann NELSON, at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Ottumwa, cementing a partnership that would flourish for six decades.
Larry's professional life was marked by dedication and hard work. After his time at the bakery, he joined Rockwell in Fairfield. While at Rockwell, he also balanced his time between being a member of the Iowa National Guard for 13 years and driving a school bus for the Fairfield community schools. His 33 years at Rockwell were interrupted only by a brief retirement, after which he returned to work at Rockwell/Meritor until the company relocated. His strong work ethic and reliability were hallmarks of his character.
Outside of work, Larry was an avid enthusiast of various pastimes. He was a regular member of the Rockwell Bowling Team, where he enjoyed the camaraderie and competition. Racing was another of Larry's passions, and he could often be found at Eddyville and Cordova, racing his prized 1957 Chevy cars and tractors, ensuring that his equipment, especially his beloved 1971 Oliver 1865, was always in top shape.
Larry's leisure time was filled with activities that brought him joy and relaxation. He was a familiar face at the Walton Club, perfecting his golf swing and enjoying the greens. Mowing his yard, playing cards, car rides with the family dog, and working around the farm were simple pleasures that Larry valued greatly. His membership at the Eagles Club in Fairfield allowed him to engage with the community and build lifelong friendships.
Larry's legacy is carried on by his loving wife, Linda, and their two daughters, Kelly SPEES of Fairfield and Jenifer McINTIRE of Des Moines. He also held a special place in his heart for an honorary daughter, Christine Dorenkamp of West Des Moines. His sister, Loretta GOULD (Robert) of Tennessee, also survives him. Larry was a proud grandfather to two grandsons, Stetson SPEES (Khloe HAMLIN) and Sterling SPEES, both of Fairfield. His life was enriched by the presence of many extended family members and a host of friends. Preceding him in death were his parents, his brother, Gary McINTIRE, and sister, Roberta KINNAMON.
A visitation for Larry will be held on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at Cranston Family Funeral Home in Fairfield beginning at 2:00 PM, with the family present to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Gifts to a memorial to be designated later by the family may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at P.O. Box 189, Fairfield, IA 52556. Online condolences can be shared at www.cranstonfamilyfuneralhome.com.
