John Larson HESTON, 71, of Newport Beach, Calif., formerly of Fairfield, died Nov. 20, 1997, following a lengthy illness. Memorial service was held Nov. 29 in Newport Beach. Donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.
HESTON was born July 24, 1926, the son of Lorenzo and Ruth HESTON. Following graduation from Fairfield High School, he joined the Air Force in the final year of World War II and trained as a pilot. After the war, he entered the University of Iowa, graduating in 1949 with a degree in physics. He worked at Collins Radio Company in Cedar Rapids and then Ford Aeroneutronics on the West Coast. He rejoined Collins Radio at its Newport Beach facility where he was involved in developing a communications system used in the Apollo Manned Space Program. He finished his career in aerospace as a senior engineer scientist with McDonnell Douglas, space division, retiring in 1991.
Survivors include his wife, Shirlene GAINES HESTON; three children, Lorene HESTON McALISTER, Richard Gaines and Lon Christopher, all of Newport Beach; eight grandchildren; and two sisters, Emma Lou CARTER and Mary Jane WHITNEY, both of Fairfield.
