By Vicki Tillis, Ledger news editor
October 31, 2005A Fairfield teenager died from injuries received in a two-car accident Friday evening about seven miles northeast of Fairfield, near 1426 Pleasant Plain Road.
Jordan Dane Smith, age 17, of Fairfield died and Teri Clark, age 43, and her 63-year-old unidentified female passenger were injured. An address was not given for Clark or her passenger.
According to the Iowa Highway Patrol, at 4:46 p.m. Friday, Smith was driving his 2000 Chevy Cavalier north on Pleasant Plain Road, when he lost control at a curve, went onto the east shoulder, over-corrected and crossed the center line where it was struck broadside by Clark's southbound 2004 Chevy Malibu. Both cars came to rest in the west ditch.
Smith was taken by AirCare to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City where he died at 7:53 p.m.
Clark and her passenger were taken by ambulance to Jefferson County Hospital. Jefferson County Hospital does not release patient information.
Smith, the son of Kristina Smith of Fairfield and Lawrence Smith Jr. of Fairfield, was a senior at Fairfield High School where he had been a member of the band and the wrestling and cross country teams.
Fairfield Community School District superintendent Steve Triplett said all secondary counselors at both the high school and Fairfield Middle School are available to talk with students.
FHS principal Tom Voorhees added local clergymen are available to speak with students and Rescare counselors also are available if needed.
Visitation opened at noon today at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds, where family will be present from 2-5 p.m. and 6-9 p.m.
Voorhees said the family is requesting that students attend the earlier visitation. He also added the senior class is sending a large easel of flowers and is talking about a memorial plaque.
Visitation will continue from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church prior to the 1:30 p.m. funeral Mass. Voorhees said students who plan to attend the funeral need a parent-signed permission form. Forms are available in the FHS office.
