Front Page, Columns 1 and 2City officers and college officials today are confronted with a second case within two months involving the abandonment of a baby's body in a waste receptacle on the Parsons campus.
The new incident came to light just before noon Monday when a college employee discovered the body of a baby in a waste receptacle in the bathroom at McDonald Quad, girls dormitory.
Later, Margaret T. HAZELWOOD, sophomore student from Huntington, N.Y., entered the Jefferson county hospital. Reports said she was in serious condition.
Charge Filed
Dick Madsen, Jefferson county attorney, today filed charges against Miss HAZELWOOD. The charges, filed in the office of the Justice of Peace Bill Foshier, read as follows:
"The defendant is accused of the crime of exposure of a human body, for that on or about the 29th day of November, 1965, in the county of Jefferson, state of Iowa, said defendant did unlawfully, wilfully and unnecessarily, indecently, expose, throw away and abandon the human body of a baby of which the defendant gave birth, the same having been deposited in a waste receptacle in the bathroom of Section 1 of the McDonald Quad girls dormitory on the Parsons college campus, the same being a public place, with intent to conceal the fact of the child's birth, all being contrary to the statutes in such case made and provided in Section 714.22 of the 1962 Code of Iowa."
Arraignment
Madsen said at 10 a.m. today the defendant will be arraigned in justice court as soon as her condition permits.
He also stated that the investigation is continuing and that further charges may be filed at a later date.
The body is at the Raymond funeral home where no orders for disposition have been made. It is a baby boy and officers said it appeared to be mature.
Dr. C. F. Watson, county medical examiner, in a report made this morning, stated that a newborn baby was dead on arrival at a local doctor's office around noon Monday.
He said the cause of death is to be determined by an autopsy. He gave no indication when the autopsy would be held.
Miss HAZELWOOD is the second Parsons coed to be charge in the finding of an infants' body. ... [Note: the remainder of this article deals with the first abandoned infant's body and its mother, and has been omitted as it is not relevant to Baby Boy HAZELWOOD.]
