Libertyville man dies in accident

BATAVIA -- A Libertyville man was killed early Sunday when a train struck the car he was in .

William HATTON, 38, died in the 4:30 a.m. accident in Batavia and Jonathan HATTON, 29, of rural Eldon was hurt, the Iowa State Patrol reported. Jonathan HATTON was in serious condition Sunday afternoon, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Troopers, who investigated the accident with Jefferson County sheriff's deputies, said Jonathan HATTON was driving the vehicle and apparently trying to beat the Burlington Northern train.

The HATTON vehicle was south-bound on Jefferson County Road H-43 in Batavia, troopers said. "The lights and bells were functioning and ...gates were lowered," according to a patrol news release.

HATTON was going around the gate and its right front was struck by the lead engine of the train.

The vehicle was knocked away from the tracks, coming to rest north of the tracks on railroad right of way, troopers said.

Both HATTONs were thrown from the vehicle. Neither was using seat-belts.

Jonathon HATTON was taken to Jefferson County Hospital, then airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.
