W. E. HARRIS

William Elmore HARRIS, son of William C. and Almira BROWN HARRIS, was born January 30th, 1859 at West Liberty. He came to Fairfield about 1881.

In 1883 he was united in marriage with Miss Stella M. STINSON of Washington, Ia., and to this union were added two children, Mrs. R. M. DAY of Minneapolis, Minn., and Carl E. HARRIS of Chicago.

In his early business career and as a young man he was associated with the firm of Risk and Hufstedler and later with Richards and Booker.

Mr. HARRIS and the late Mr. Cuddy formed a partnership in the clothing business in Independence, later returning to Fairfield they located on the East side of the public square. After a number of years here they removed to the south side of the square in the place now occupied by the Fair store. While in this location he subsequently, acquired the entire business.

In addition to his local interests, Mr. HARRIS, for a number of years covered Iowa for New York and Chicago clothing firms. Over a long period of years he represented the Fairfield Glove and Mitten Co., with these other lines, and in the later years of his life traveled almost exclusively for this company.

Mr. HARRIS was active in all civic affairs and as one of an early group of local business men whose initiative and civic pride was responsible for the location in Fairfield a number of the local factories. Collectively these men generated a spirit of "We Will," in Fairfield, that caused the town to progress.

Mr. HARRIS was an active worker in the Knights of Pythias, being nominated for a Life member and for years he held local and state offices. He was interested in sports and was an ardent fisherman. He was one of the local members of the Isaac Walton League and was a contributor to the National Conservation movement.

He leaves but one sister all the other members of the family having answered the summons to the great beyond. Surviving also are his wife, one son and one daughter. He was highly respected and will be long remembered by a large number of friends and acquaintances..
