W. H. GUYER, 70, prominent Fairfield business man, passed away at 9:30 a.m. this morning at the Jefferson county hospital after a short illness. He took suddenly ill Monday at his home, 107 Iowa avenue, and was taken to the hospital last night where he died a few hours later.
The body was taken to the Monger funeral home where last rites are pending.
Mr. GUYER had been in the insurance business here in Fairfield for many years, and was active in church and civic affairs. He came to Fairfield in 1918 as assistant cashier in the Iowa State Bank.
He later went to Salem, Iowa, where he held a similar position in the bank there. He returned to Fairfield and entered the insurance business, a business which he has since followed except for a period of time when he served as assistant treasurer at Parsons college.
For a time he and the late James F. Wilson were partners in the insurance business. After the death of Mr. Wilson, P. S. Junkin purchased half interest in the business.
When Mr. GUYER accepted the position at the college in June, 1945, he sold his interest to Mr. Junkin. In October, 1946, Mr. GUYER resigned at the college and purchased the insurance agency from Mr. Junkin and had operated the business since.
Mr. GUYER also served his community for several years as city assessor. He held the office at the time he accepted the position at the college, and resigned. E. G. Fligg was appointed by the city council to fill the unexpired term.
After his return to the insurance business, Mr. GUYER again was a candidate for the assessor's position in the 1946 general election. He was elected but never took office since the new state law establishing a county assessor became effective.
Mr. GUYER was a long-term member of the Presbyterian church and served as trustee for many years and was a member of the choir. He also was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and took an active part in civic affairs.
William Hayes GUYER was born July 10, 1877, in Glenwood, Iowa, where he was reared and educated. He later moved to Malvern where he married Kathernie (sic) COTTRELL on November 12, 1903.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Max H. GUYER, who resides at Okmulgee, Oklahoma and is professor of history at Oklahoma A. & M.
