DEATH OF MISS ALTA GUSTISON IS PUZZLE TO MAYO PHYSICIANS

Young Lady Faints and Succumbs While Receiving Medical Treatment

News of the death of Miss Alta GUSTISON at Rochester, Minn., was received Tuesday by her mother, Mrs. Charlotte GUSTISON, in this city. The body arrived Wednesday and will be held until Saturday for burial, pending the arrival of a brother from Pendleton, Oregon.

Miss GUSTISON had gone to Rochester from Washington, D. C., expecting to receive surgical treatment and had been joined there by her sister, Miss Cora, of Seattle. While at the Mayo hospital being treated for an abscess on the nose she fainted and never regained consciousness. The case was a very puzzling one to the physicians there as there had been no anesthetic administered and the death was wholly unexpected.

FUNERAL OF MISS ALTA GUSTISON WAS HELD AT 2 O'CLOCK

Miss Alta Fredricka GUSTISON was born near Four Corners, Jefferson county, Iowa, August 4, 1899. She came with her parents to Fairfield in 1910, and was confirmed and united with the First Methodist Episcopal church of Fairfield.

She graduated with high honor and distinction from the Fairfield High school in June 1917. On August 4th of that same year she left with her sister, Cora, for Seattle, Wash., where she attended business college finishing her course in the short time of three months. She became very efficient in her profession of stenography and in January 1919 the United States government wired for her to take a position with the War Risk Insurance bureau at Washington, D. C. She was promoted from time to time and at her death was secretary to one of the leading officials of the bureau.

For three years she was troubled more or less with extreme nervousness and at times with rapid heart action which she thought was due to a goitre and which various physicians had advised her to have removed. She arrived at Rochester, Minn on July 4th to have this operation performed but with all the tests the Mayo physicians gave her they found her absoluetly (sic) normal and nothing that would indicate that the slight goitre which she had was in any way the cause of her condition and refused to make the operation. They pronounced her in fine health except for an over secretion in her nose and a little bronchial trouble which had bothered her from childhood. This news made Alta so happy in the thought that she could go home soon and not have to take the dreaded operation. A few minutes later she went to have a treatment on her nose and when the doctor had finished this treatment Alta fainted and passed away shortly afterward, although there were a half dozen of the Mayo physicians tried to bring her out of the faint.

Her sister, Cora, from Seattle Wash was with her and accompanied her to all her tests and examinations while she was in Rochester.

When death came she was twenty-one years, eleven months and eight days old. Her life was joy and happiness and the picture of her inspiring smile which she had for everyone will always remain in the hearts of all with whom she came in contact.

Her sudden departure brings tears of sorrow, but her beautiful Christian spirit and love will continue to shine on all her bereaved relations and friends. She was a faithful and an active church member and her services were her master.

She was so devoted to her home and parents and always doing things for them and their happiness to the point of great sacrifice on her part.

Those who are left to mourn the loss of truly beloved and honored daughter and sister are her mother, Mrs. Charlotte GUSTISON, sisters, Miss Cora Marie of Seattle, Wash and Mrytle E. of Fairfield; brothers, Carmel, of Rock Island, Ward V. of Pendleton, Oregon and Virgil E. A. of Fairfield.

Her father, Anthony GUSTISON, passed away May 5, 1915.

Funeral services were held at two o'clock this afternoon from the Methodist church in charge of Dr. W. R. Keesey of Mt. Pleasant. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery.
