DESPONDENT; HE TAKES OWN LIFE

Frederick GREENFIELD Drank Poison and Died in Father's Arms Last Night

Despondent because of his inability to get employment and a complication of his love affairs, Frederick GREENFIELD, 22-year-old son of O. J. GREENFIELD, 102 North Second street, last night about 6 o'clock drank poison, fled in agony two blocks to the C. F. Long cigar store where he sank down on the steps, and a few minutes later died in his father's arms in the Model barber shop..

Young GREENFIELD had tried repeatedly to get employment, following his honorable discharge from the army after a year's enlistment, and made the rounds again yesterday, without results. Yesterday evening he became morose and sat on the front porch instead of going in to supper. His step-mother, who was very fond of him, tried to persuade him to come in, but was repulsed. His father went out to find him and discovered him in the shop behind the house. The boy refused again to come to supper, and then gave a cry of distress and drank something from a bottle, crying out, "I've taken poison.." He broke away and ran down the street, his father in pursuit. He died within 15 minutes.

A physician was summoned and administered antidotes, but the poison worked swiftly and there was no chance to save him.

Both the lad's father and Mrs. GREENFIELD are nearly prostrated today over the tragedy. They had tried to make him happy and to help him in his troubles and are grief-stricken at their failure.

Young GREENFIELD was born in Fairfield, August 10, 1907 and had lived here all his life. He attended the public schools, worked as a painter and a little over a year ago joined the regular army, being stationed at Fort Des Moines. In the army he made a good record, was a star football man on the regular team, playing center. He weighed 180 pounds. He had served two enlistments in the National Guard company here.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 10:30 o'clock at Hoskins funeral home and will be conducted by Dr. Gilbert Voorhies, the dead boy being a member of the Presbyterian Sunay school and an attendant at the church. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery beside his grandmother, Mrs. James GREENFIELD who died about three years ago. ...

In his earlier years Mr. GREENFIELD attended the public schools and was especially proficient in athletics. Arriving at military age he enlisted in the local Service company and served faithfully for two enlistments. Aspiring for greater military experience he then enlisted in Battery E, 18th Field Artillery at Fort Des Moines, where he received his honorable discharge on August 7 last, and returned to Fairfield.

He was of a pleasant disposition and had a legion of friends, both here and elsewhere.
