Had Lived in Fairfield for Twenty-Five Years and Was in Civil War
Alonzo J. GREEN, 200 South Second street, passed away at his home at 4:30 oclock this morning after an illness of three weeks. He was born November 25, 1844 at Richwoods. He married Miss Ruth COLLINS of Salina, November 1, 1866.
His wife passed away eight years ago and his oldest daughter, Mrs. William CHARLTON, died twelve years ago. He had lived in Fairfield for twenty-five years and had been in poor health for some time.
He joined Company M of the Fourth Iowa Cavalry of the Civil War when he was nineteen years old and served for one and one half years.
The following children survive: Dallas M. of Beckwoth; Myrtha of home; Harlan of Windom, Minn; Mrs. John CONNOR of Topeka, Kan.; Mrs. Ben LEATHERS and Mrs. Omar HOSKINS of Fairfield.
Funeral services will be held at the home tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 oclock in charge of Dr. U. S. Smith assisted by Dr. R. H. Polly. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery.

Passed Away at His Home Tuesday Morning; Was a Civil War Veteran
Funeral services for the late A. J. GREEN, who died at his home, 200 West Jefferson street, Tuesday, were held yesterday afternoon at the home at 2:30 oclock. Dr. U. S. Smith had charge of the services and he was assisted by Dr. R. H. Polly, who spoke very feelingly of Mr. GREEN's life as a soldier in the Civil War.
Nine Civil war veterans were present at the funeral and a very large group of friends and neighbors. The floral offerings were beautiful and very profuse.
Mrs. M. H. Bryant and Mrs. Frank Pierson sang two duet numbers: "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "The City Four Square."
The pall bearers were: George Workman, J. C. Facer, Harvey Eirckson (sic), Fred Flinspach, George Neal, and G. G. Chandler. Interment was in Evergreen cemetery.
Those here from a distance to attend the services were: Dr. Chauncey COLLINS of Oskaloosa; Dr. Russell COLLINS of Fremont; John CONNOR of Topeko, Kan. (sic); Mr. and Mrs. Enoch Dean and Mrs. Ruth Walker of Batavia; and Miss Verda Baldwin of Council Bluffs.

A. J. GREEN
Alonzo J. GREEN, son of Sylvester and Elizabeth GREEN was born at Richwood, Jefferson county, Iowa, Nov. 25, 1844, and passed away at the age of 84 years, 6 months, 16 days at his home, 200 West Jefferson street, Fairfield, Iowa, June 11, 1929, at 4:30 o'clock a.m., after a prolonged illness, being confined to his bed the past three weeks.
He was united in marriage to Ruth E. COLLINS on November 1, 1866, at Salina, Iowa, who preceded him in death, April 19, 1921. To this union were born seven children, Mrs. William A. CHARLTON, who passed away in January, 1917; Dallas M. of near Beckwith, Iowa; Myrtha at home; Harlan of Windom Minnesota; Mrs. Florence CONNER of Topeka, Kansas; Mrs. Pearl LEATHERS and Mrs. Darle HOSKINS of Fairfield, Iowa.
He leaves sixteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was the eldest and the last to survive of a family of eight children, the following brothers and sisters having preceded him in death: Clara E. CHESTER, Benjamin A. Winfield, F. Olive L. Chester, Clora A. LYNN, Oran W. and Della May GORDON.
He had always lived in Richwoods until 25 years ago, when he moved to Fairfield.
He united with the M. E. church in Richwoods in early manhood and transferred his membership to the M. E. church at Fairfield, Nov. 4, 1906.
He enlisted in the Civil War March 19, 1864, in Company M, 4th Iowa Cavalry being mustered into service April 14, 1864, and mustered out August 8, 1865, at Atlanta, Georgia. The only surviving ones of the company are Elliott Taylor of Glasgow, Iowa; Gust Smithberg of Four Corners, Iowa; Sam Turner and M. H. Westenhaver of Fairfield, Iowa. He fought in some important battles of the war such as Cupalo, Miss, Columbus, Ga., Selma, Ala., and Macon, Ga., and was on a detailed raid to drive Price out of Missouri the winter of 1864.
