OTTUMWA -- Mary Alyce GRAVES, 78, of 402 Tacoma, died April 27, 2003, at University Hospitals in Iowa City (note: in Johnson Co., IA).

Arrangements are pending with Reece Funeral Home.

Mary Alyce GRAVES

OTTUMWA -- Mary Alyce GRAVES, 78, of 402 Tacoma died 5 a.m. April 27, 2003, at the University Hospitals, Iowa City.

She was born April 12, 1925 in Ottumwa to charles H. and Jennie B. SMITHERMAN RATCLIFF.

She grew up in Ottumwa, had lived in Washington D.C. for many years and then returned to Ottumwa 20 years ago. She had a career as an opera singer. After returning to Ottumwa she worked at Sunnyslope Care Center. She was a graduate of Buena Vista University with a degree in counseling at the age of 76. A member of First Christian Church, she sang in the choir and was in the bell choir. She taught piano and voice lessons to elementary students. She was a member of the Camel Club.

Surviving is a son, William GRAVES III of Woonsocket, R. I.; a daughter, Jenny GRAVES of Germantown, Md.; three grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by a son, Paul J. GRAVES; her parents; stepfather Luther FEAR; and a brother, Charles RATCLIFF.

Her body has been cremated.

Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Saturday at First Christian Church with Rev. Beth Ann French officiating.

A memorial has been established to First Christian Church or the Camel Club.
