'Friday' GOODWIN dies at 88

Wilford E. "Friday" GOODWIN, 88, longtime Fairfield auto mechanic, died at 3:12 p.m. Friday at the Jefferson County Hospital.

While he was 88 years old, he had observed only 21 birthdays since he was born Feb. 29, 1896, a Leap Year date.

In an interview earlier this year, he recalled he was eight years old before he had his first actual birthday. That was Feb. 29, 1904. It seems that in 1900 they didn't observe Leap Year and there were only 28 days days in February that year.

Services for Wilford E. GOODWIN will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Behner Funeral Home. The Rev. Charles Kincaid will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church or the Cancer Fund.

GOODWIN was born in a log cabin Feb. 29, 1896, in Bunch, near Bloomfield, the son of John David and Rachel GLASSBURNER GOODWIN. The family moved to Fairfield when he was six years old.

GOODWIN was active in the garage business from 1919 until failing health forced his retirement in 1983. The family home is at 206 E. Briggs.

He was married to Grace HAMILTON Dec. 14, 1921, in Bloomfield. She died July 9, 1981.

Four sons and a daughter survive. They are Robert L., Horseshoe Bend, Ark., Kenneth, Security, Colo.; Wilford "Bud", Howell, Mich., Dr. Richard, Mount Pleasant, Carole O'NEILL, Fairfield. Seventeen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren also survive.
