Lewis A. GLUENKIN

The funeral service for Lewis A. GLUENKIN, 94, who died July 3, 1991, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Raymond Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard K. Wallarab officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

GLUENKIN was born Feb. 15, 1897, at Lexington, Neb., to John and Johanna VAN VEEST GLUENKIN. He married Anna Margaret VANDERZYL July 21, 1943. She died on Aug. 15, 1989.

He was a 1924 graduate of Dubuque University with graduate study at the University of Iowa. He taught government as well as having a coaching career that spanned 39 years at Fairfield High School and Parsons College.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Clinton Masonic Lodge No. 15 - marking 50 years as a Mason in 1976, a life member of the Elks Lodge, and a member of the Fairfield Golf and Country Club and Walton Club.

Although sports fans called him "Gloomy Gus,", GLUENKIN coached many winning seasons in track, football and basketball and also was director of athletics at Parsons. Former high school and college players honored him at an "L.A. Gluenkin Night" in 1979.

He was recognized by the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce with a distinguished service award in 1966, and was chairman of the Fairfield Water Board for more than 20 years. He retired from the board in 1988.

He was preceded in death by his wife, five brothers and two sisters. Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the funeral home at their convenience. Memorials may be contributed to the Jefferson County Hospital Life Line program or to the Amanda the Panda Camp, a support program for children experiencing grief. The address is 1821 Grand Avenue, West Des Moines, IA, 50265. (Note: This organization no longer exists, and has not filed a Tax Exemption form since 2016.)
