Dean R. GLINES Victim--

Local Man Fatally Injured

Fairfield and Jefferson County recorded the first traffic fatality of 1967 Friday night when Dean R. GLINES, Rural Rute 4, died at 11:10 p.m. of injuries he received when he was hit by a car earlier in the evening.

Investigating officers said GLINES apparently died of severe head injuries and possible internal injuries.

The accident took place about 5:30 p.m. on highway 34 in the west part of the city near the Iowa State Liquor Store. The report said GLINES was walking across the four-lane highway, from the south side to the north.

The point of impact took place in right-hand lane of the highway as the car was traveling west.

Ronald Joseph Hesse, 20, rural route 1, Selma, was driving the car that struck GLINES. It appeared as if the pedestrian stepped in front of the moving car. The left front end of the car was damaged by the impact.

GLINES, 70, was taken to the Jefferson County Hospital by ambulance where he died shortly after 11 p.m.

Police said the fatality will be classified as a death within the city since the city limits along Highway 34 has been extended to the west line of the Nelson Nursing Home property.

Services for GLINES will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Weston Behner Funeral Home in charge of the Rev. E. Wayne Ryan.

GLINES was a retired railroad worker. He had been employed by the CB&Q railroad for 37 years. A veteran of World War I, he was a member of the American Legion and Fraternal Order of Eagles.

GLINES was born April 3, 1895 at Brighton, the son of Arthur and Nellie SHEPHERD GLINES. Most of his life was spent in Fairfield. She (sic) was married to Mary HARPER in 1929. She preceded him in death in 1932. On July 6, 1935 he was married to Mildred WILSON, who survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Yvonne SCOTTON, Libertyville; Mrs. Mildred DAVIDSON, Fairfield; and Mrs. Mary Alice VERMILLION, Keokuk. Six grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive.
