Pleasant PlainVirginia Lee POPEJOY, 97, formerly of Pleasant Plain, died Thursday, October 5, 2023, at Bishop Drumm Care Center in Johnston, Iowa (note: in Polk Co., IA). She was born September 2, 1926, in Cedar Rapids, IA, to Clarence William and Lucile Corine (BURROUGHS) SHAFFER. She moved to rural Washington County when very young, graduated from Brighton High School and married William (Bill) POPEJOY June 8, 1944, at her parents' home in Washington, IA. Virginia was a homemaker, worked outside the home, and supported Bill's interior and exterior spray-painting business. She was postmaster of the Pleasant Plain Post Office, located in their home, in 1968-1969. They owned and operated Popejoy's DX in Brighton from 1968-1996 where she was also bookkeeper. Virginia enjoyed gardening, sewing, knitting and was an excellent baker. She and Bill took up bowling and golf, were members of the Walton Club in Fairfield. Virginia enjoyed many activities at Green Acres in Donna, TX, where they wintered after retirement. She was active at Martina Place Assisted Living in Johnston, IA where she had lived since 2010.
Virginia is survived by her two daughters; Dixie INMAN of Libertyville, IL, and Peggy KERR (George) of Polk City, IA; daughter-in-law, Jill POPEJOY of Green Valley, AZ; 7 grandchildren, Steve INMAN (Angella), Tyler KERR (Brooke), Spencer KERR (Kristin), Donni POPEJOY (David CHEUNG), Melanie POPEJOY, Kelly POPEJOY and Kate POPEJOY; and 9 great-grandchildren, Olivia and Reese INMAN, Natalie and Madeline KERR, Rosie and Willa KERR, Cameron and Vivian ALLEY and Madeline POPEJOY.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill; son, Randy; and siblings, Robert (Bob) and Ruth SHAFFER.
Memorial services will be held at 11 A.M. Wednesday, October 11, 2023, at the Pleasant Plain Friends Church with Pastor Sarah Fitch officiating. Burial will follow at the Friends Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials for the Pleasant Plain Friends Church may be sent to the church or directed to the Alzheimer's Association, https://www.alz.org/get-involved-now/donate. Gould Funeral Home of Brighton is assisting the family.
