OBITUARY

SAMUEL T. GILBERT

Sam GILBERT, as he liked best to be called by his friends, was born April 14, 1876, the fourth of six children of Thos. J. and Christiana COOP GILBERT, themselves members of early Jefferson county families. The home that then greeted him was on the farm in Penn township which in later years was to be his. The ideals of that early home combined with his making the most of the cultural opportunities of the time, prepared him for his individual attainments and gave weight to his influence on community life.

The school and church were then the principal community agencies of culture. He did not connect himself with the latter but he always recognized its claims upon him as a member of the community and its teachings as needed for an ideal life. Its appeals he never met with an empty hand. Its guide book, the Bible, came to have a personal value to him.

Later when farm organization assumed its importance, he saw its value for he was a farmer unashamed whose kind do not make a peasantry. His first successes were in union with his older brothers, John L. and W. D., and later as an independent owner.

On Dec. 6, 1911, he married Miss Daisy GIBSON, who became a worthy partner in his ambitions and ideals. Mrs. GILBERT and one daughter, Mrs. Glen EYESTONE of Fairfield survive him. Another daughter, Virginia, died in 1926 in her fifth year.

Also surviving are one brother, W. D. and two sisters, Mrs. Jennie FLINSPACH and Mrs. E. C. FLINSPACH all of Fairfield.

Two years and more of failing health ended in his death at the Jefferson County Hospital, July 20, 1940. A wide circle of friends extends its sympathy to those who most feel their loss for to this circle also he was found faithful. Those gathering for the last service at the Hoskins Funeral home in Fairfield taxed its capacity. Rev. Melvin A. Pearce, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Urbana, Ill., and a former pastor of Antioch church near his home conducted it. It was suitable in all its parts. Ellery Kyle, his sister, Winona as accompanist sang "There'll Be No Dark Valley" and "Have Thine Own Way, Lord." His body was born to Evergreen Cemetery by Jay and Russell Simmons, Raymond and Harold COOP, Bert Avery and Ed White. Mr. Pearce led the gathered friends in a very fitting committal service.
