DR. J. GAUMER DIES AFTER A LONG ILLNESS

Dr. J. S. GAUMER, oldest doctor in Fairfield in point of service, last night passed away at his home, 808 South Main street, after an illness of about a year. He was 74 years of age at the time of his death (sic 73 years, 11 months, 27 days).

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at the Monger funeral home in charge of Dr. L. H. Scheerer. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.

Dr. GAUMER has been a resident for 70 years, coming here with his parents when he was four. He was born September 13, 1872, at Victor, Iowa, the son of the late Solomon and Anne GAUMER.

He was reared and educated in Fairfield. He graduated from Parsons college with the class of 1897, and then attended Rush Medical college where he graduated in 1900. He was allowed to complete the four-year course at Rush college in three years because of his outstanding scholastic record at Parsons.

When Dr. GAUMER graduated from Rush college, he bought a doctor's office in Danville, Iowa, and with a horse loaned to him by his father, and a cart which he managed to buy himself, he started his practice.

After practicing four years, he moved his office to Fairfield where had continued practice until he was forced to retire about a year ago because of ill health.

On June 18, 1902, he married Minnie COREY, of Fairfield, who survives.

Dr. GAUMER's military career dates back to 1898 when he enlisted in old Company M, of the 50th Iowa Volunteers and served during the Spanish-Americah war. He was first lieutenant in the Medical Corps of the Iowa National Guard in 1914-16, and saw service on the border.

Dr. GAUMER was a member of Clinton Lodge No. 15, A. F. and A. M., past master and district lecturer; a charter member of the Fairfield Lions club; Jefferson County Medical association; Country club, and a member of the Methodist church. He served as coroner of Jefferson county for five terms, three times elected to the office and twice filling vacancies.

Besides his wife, Dr. GAUMER is survived by one son, Stewart, Fairfield, and a grandson, Stewart, jr. Two sisters and two brothers also survive. they are Bessie GAUMER, Fairfield; Mrs. Francis BRENIMAN, Brooklyn, N. Y.; Dr. R. S. GAUMER, Galesburg, Ill.; and Hugh GAUMER, Sacramento, Cal. Several other relatives and friends also survive.
