Woman dies in crash near Washington

WASHINGTON -- Fairfield woman Ann GARY, age 76, died in a car crash Labor Day afternoon between Washington and Brighton.

An Iowa State Patrol crash report said GARY's car crossed over the center line, heading south, and collided head-on with a driver from Brighton. GARY was transported to the Washington County Hospital but was "deceased as a result of the collision," according to the report, which said the crash remained under investigation.

The Iowa State Patrol and its response was assisted by the Washington County Sheriff's Office, Washington Police Department, Washington Fire Department and Washington First Responders.

ANN ELISABETH GARY

Ann Elisabeth GARY, 76, a resident of Fairfield, died Monday, September 4, 2023, as the result of an automobile accident in Washington County, Iowa.

Ann was born August 8, 1947 in Washington, D.C., the daughter of Royce and Martha Esther THOMPSON. She married Hugh Walter GARY August 25, 1968 in Fairfield. He preceded her in death August 16, 1997.

Ann and Walt owned and operated the original Jefferson County Ambulance Service, and later owned and operated Gary's Paradise Donuts. Ann was an active volunteer and supporter of Jefferson County Little League, formerly known as Fairfield Little League, where she operated the concession stand. Lastly, Ann worked at Casey's in Fairfield for 15 years.

Those left to honor her memory include her children and their spouses, Scott and Brandee GARY of Lees Summit, Missouri, and Heather and James JONES of Beverly Hills, California; grandchildren, Taylor MURPHY, Shelbee (Steven) SOLLARS, Imbie, Tayten, Solon, and Iyla JONES; great-grandchildren, Sophia and Liam; and her brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Bonnie THOMPSON of Fairfield.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and son, Timothy GARY.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Jefferson County Little League.

A memorial gathering will be held at Behner Funeral Home from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 22, 2023. Private burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield, Iowa. Behner Funeral Home in Fairfiels is assisting the family with arrangements.
