MARY ELIZABETH GRIMES
Fairfield

Mary Elizabeth GRIMES, 90, a lifelong resident of Fairfield, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2023, at Addington Place.

Mary was born January 14, 1932, to William H. and Ethel (HOWSARE) NICHOLSON near Crawfordville, Iowa. Mary attended school there and later attended her high school years in Washington, Iowa. Mary moved to Fairfield and met the love of her life, Earl E. GRIMES. They married on July 3, 1954. Mary worked for over 30 years at the Fairfield Glove Factory. She also helped Earl on their small acreage farm outside of Fairfield, where she enjoyed planting a very large garden, of which she shared the produce with many. Mary's true passion was preparing all the holiday meals and family get-togethers.

Mary loved playing cards, bingo, planting flowers, and having her little dog (Abby) on her lap. She belonged to the First United Methodist Church, served on the Fairfield Community Center board, was apast (sic) member of the Fairfield women's club, and a faithful supporter of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, parents, mother-in-law Mary Belle GRIMES, and brother William E. (Bill) NICHOLSON.

Surviving to cherish her memories are her son, Leonard (Linda) GRIMES of Pella, her daughter, Connie (John) RATHBUN of Fairfield, her grandchildren, Scott (Angie) GRIMES, Brian (Stephanie) GRIMES, Heather RATHBUN and Nathan RATHBUN, four great-granddaughters, one brother, Mike (Judy) NICHOLSON, and two sisters, Ruth STANLEY and Barbara (John) GRONWALD.

The Behner Funeral Home is taking care of Mary's arrangements. A celebration of life will take place at the First United Methodist Church on April 21, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. with co officiating by Pastor Al Coffin and Chaplain Gordon Hawkins.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to EveryStep Hospice or Fairfield Community Center.
