Mrs. Sarah WADSWORTH CLARKE died at her home in this city at 8 o'clock Tuesday evening. Mrs. CLARKE was born in Vermont in 1815. She and Dr. CLARKE came to Mt. Pleasant in 1843 and to Fairfield in 1857.
Mrs. CLARKE with Mrs. Slagle and Mrs. Ellis Woods and others made the uniforms for Company E, 2nd Iowa Vol., when they went to the war. All through the great struggle she worked for the soldiers in the "sanitary commission." Later with mrs. Slagle she canvassed the town for funds for the library; in fact she always took an active part in public work. Until one week ago, although 89 years old Mrs. CLARKE read the daily papers and all late books and kept fully abreast of the times in a knowledge of the affairs of the world. On Nov. 20th she received a fall fracturing a rib, the resulting confinement developed a pneumonia to which she succumed (sic).

Sarah WADSWORTH CLARKE died last Tuesday evening at the age of 89 years. Born in Vermont and married in Ohio in 1837, she, with her husband, Dr. Charles Shipman CLARKE, moved to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, in 1843. There Dr. CLARKE practiced medicine until, broken in health, he moved to Fairfield in 1857. Here Dr. CLARKE died in 1882.
Mrs. CLARKE was a writer, and published many stories in eastern journals, besides frequently expressing her views on local questions in the home papers. She was active in the work of the soldiers aid society during the rebellion and the work for the Fairfield public library in its early years of struggle.
Of later years her chief hope was for the establishment of a hospital in Fairfield. Through her husband's work, she knew so well the need of a hospital for the sick that she tried in many ways to make one possible here.
Until a few days before her death Mrs. CLARKE had a clear, active mind. She read the papers and magazines and late books and knew all about the affairs of the world. She left on her writing table an unfinished response to a toast that was to have been made at a dinner for the Fairfield academy of literature. This dinner was to have been given at her home on the day she died.
Funeral services were held at the family residence on South Main, conducted by Rev. Cole, of Mt. Pleasant, assisted by Rev. Roffbaugh, of Keokuk, and interment made in Evergreen cemetery.
