Rites Saturday For Dr. GARMOE

Last rites will be here Saturday for Dr. Merle E. GARMOE, former Fairfield resident who passed away yesterday in a hospital at Englewood, Calif., where he had gone to spend the winter.

Dr. GARMOE was a brother of Carl GARMOE, Fairfield, and made his home in Fairfield in 1919. Since that time he practiced optometry in Cedar Rapids for 30 years.

The body is scheduled to arrive in Fairfield Thursday night. The services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Weston Behner funeral home and burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. Dr. L. L. Weis will officiate.

Dr. GARMOE's home was at Springville, Iowa. He and his wife went to California five weeks ago to spend the winter. They visited at the Carl GARMOE home here enroute to the west coast.

Merle E. GARMOE, 67, was born May 16, 1886, at Winfield, Iowa. He was the son of the late William B. (sic - William D.) and Martha Lois THOMPSON GARMOE.

He attended public schools at Winfield, and Iowa Wesleyan college at Mt. Pleasant. He studied watchmaking at Bradley university in Peoria, and was graduated from the school of optometry at Kansas City.

He started his practice in Cedar Rapids and continued in business for 30 years, retiring about two years ago because of his health. Dr. GARMOE had suffered a heart ailment for the past several years. Following his retirement, he moved to Springville.

Besides his wife, Dr. GARMOE is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Virginia BROTEN, Palm Springs, Calif.; two grandchildren; a step-daughter, Mrs. Betty Jean ROGERS, Springville; and one brother, Carl GARMOE, Fairfield.

He was a member of the Masonic lodge and Shrine at Cedar Rapids.

Note: Buried in Lot 3rd.016. Although he has a joint monument, the wife's side is blank. He was married twice, first to Marie E. HENDERSON (1909, Cedar Rapids, IA), and second to Elizabeth G. SHEARER ROGERS (1944, Fairfield, IA).
