Woman dies in diving accident

Linda Kay GARMOE, 27, former Fairfield resident, drowned Sunday in a scuba diving accident about 20 miles south of Santa Barbara, Calif.

Miss GARMOE, who resided in Marina Del Ray, Calif., was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl GARMOE, 1102 S. Second St.

Services are pending at the Raymond Funeral Home.

Full details of the accident which occurred about 11 a.m. are not known. Miss GARMOE was scuba diving with a group in the Pacific Ocean. Her body was recovered a short time later.

Miss GARMOE was born Feb. 4, 1951 in Fairfield, the daughter of Earl and Ethel THOMAN GARMOE. She graduated from Fairfield High School in 1969 and received her degree at the University of Iowa in 1973.

She moved to California in 1973 where she was a sales representative for Parke-Davis Pharmaceutical Co. She was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her parents; one sister, Jeanie GARMOE, Des Moines; and her maternal grandmother, Celia THOMAN, Elgin, Iowa.

Linda GARMOE rites

Services for Linda Kay GARMOE, 27, former Fairfield resident, are tentatively planned Thursday at the Raymond Funeral Home. The exact time has not been set.

Miss GARMOE, Marina Del Rey, Calif., died Sunday in a scuba diving accident. Last rites will be conducted by the Rev. John Wilken. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

A memorial service will be held Sunday in Marina Del Ray with the Rev. John Davis, former associate minister of the First United Methodist Church here, officiating. Davis is now pastor of a church in Yosemite National Park.

The diving accident occurred about 11 a.m. Sunday off the coast of Santa Barbara, Calif. Miss GARMOE was an experienced diver. She disappeared while diving in about 15 feet of water with a group of 40 scuba divers off Santa Cruze Island. A heavy surf was reported at the time.

A rescue search team was summoned to the scene and Miss GARMOE was found by her diving companion in an underground cave. She died aboard a boat taking her back to the mainland.

Miss GARMOE was a sales representative for Parke-Davis Pharmaceutical Co.

Memorial for Linda GARMOE

The Parke-Davis Medical Surgical Division has contributed $1,000 to the American Surgical Trade Association in memory of Linda GARMOE.

A former Fairfield resident, she lost her life last month while scuba diving off the coast of California.

D. J. Livernois, director of sales for Parke-Davis, said the $1,000 contribution to the A.S.T.A. will be known as the Linda GARMOE Memorial Scholarshup (sic) Fund.

He said, "This is being done to perpetuate the memory of Linda and to serve as a reminder of her vitality and contribution to this industry."

Prior to her death Linda was a sales representative for Parke-Davis Pharmaceutical Co.

Miss GARMOE was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl GARMOE, 1102 S. Second.

The fatal diving accident took place Sept. 24 about 20 miles south of Santa Barbara while she was scuba diving with a group in the Pacific Ocean.
