ANDREW GANTZ, AGED RESIDENT. ANSWERS THE LAST SUMMONS

Andrew GANTZ, one of the best known of the older residents of Fairfield, passed away at his home on West Washington street here this morning at 5:00 o'clock. The immediate cause of his death was heart trouble and he had been in failing health for the past six months. He was 85 years of age.

Mr. GANTZ was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John GANTZ and was born in Ohio. He came with his parents to Jefferson county, Iowa, when 15 years of age and has resided here ever since. The family first lived on a farm northwest of Fairfield.

He is survived by two brothers, Jacob of this city, and John, of Omaha, Neb. A brother William and sister Martha died a number of years ago.

In early manhood he was married to Miss Emma KENNEDY (sic - Mary Ellen CANADAY) and to them were born ten children, four of whom are dead. Cora May died in infancy, Florence Ashmead and Lowie M. GANTZ died about 18 years ago Edward about ten years ago. The mother died in August 1916. The following children survive him: Harry C. GANTZ, Brookville, Major GANTZ, Los Angeles, Cal.; John, Dayton, Wash.; Wm. of Clarke, Neb.; Mrs. Ida SNYDER, Clarke, Neb., and Mrs. Mertie MILLANE, of Fairfield.

In September, 1917, Mr. GANTZ married Mrs. Sarah E. CAMPBELL, who survives him. For about forty-five years Mr. GANTZ had been a member of the Methodist church.

Funeral services have not as yet been made, but the service will probably be held Monday afternoon from the Methodist church.

GANTZ.

Andrew GANTZ, Jefferson county pioneer, widely known and highly respected, died Saturday at his home on West Washington street, in Fairfield, at the age of 85 years. His health had been failing for a considerable period but the direct cause of his death was heart failure.

Mr. GANTZ was born in Ohio and came to this county with his parents fifteen years later. He was the father of ten children, the following six of whom survive: Harry, of Brookville; Charles "Major" GANTZ, Los Angeles; John GANTZ, Dayton, O.; William GANTZ, Clarke, Neb.; Mrs. Ida SNYDER, Clarke, Neb.; Mrs. Myrtle MILLANE, Fairfield. He is also survived by his widow.

Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church Monday afternoon by the Rev. Keesey.

Note: Buried initially in the Fairfield Abbey Mausoleum (which stood in what is now the 6th addition to Evergreen Cemetery) with first wife Mary, and upon its closure and demolition was moved to Evergreen Cemetery Lot 2nd.267½. Second wife Sarah Frances PETERS SCOTT CAMPBELL GANTZ is buried with her second husband, George A. CAMPBELL. Andrew was born August 3, 1833.
