MRS. CHARLES H. GAGE
Florence Nightingale CORRY, daughter of William and Eleanor CORRY, was born on a farm five miles east of Birmingham, Iowa, on July 1, 1869. When she was three years old she came with her parents to Fairfield. The family soon decided to move to the country, locating in the Richwoods neighborhood. They later moved to a farm two miles north of this city.
In March, 1884, they left the farm and purchased an improved five acre tract on West Burlington street in Fairfield. Opportunities for schooling were ideal at this time, and Florence enrolled as a student in the old Franklin school, where she soon made many friends. She took a prominent part in the things that make life worth while, making the most of her opportunities, and by diligent study winning many honors.
While in school she met Charles H. GAGE. They were married in the CORRY home April 6, 1893. Their honeymoon was spent at the World's Fair, which was being held in Chicago at that time.
In 1897 they bought the home at 306 West Broadway, this place having been purchased by Mr. GAGE's grandfather, E. S. GAGE, in 1851.
Mrs. GAGE joined the Presbyterian Church while attending Parsons college, but after her marriage transferred her membership to the Congregational church, where she was a faithful worker until the building was destroyed by fire in 1910. She has been a member of Chapter C, P. E. O. since 1894, always attending its meetings when she was able to do so.
On Monday, September 25, 1939 she left us to meet her Maker above. Funeral services were held at the Murray Funeral Home Thursday, September 28, A. K. Harper conducting the services. The appropriate music and beautiful floral offerings lent added impressiveness. The body was laid to rest in Evergreen Cemetery.
Her passing was a great shock to her relatives and friends who had until lately seen her so well and strong. She was loved by those who knew her best for her sterling qualities of mind and heart. A devoted wife in every way and a true helpmate, her chief interests centered in her home. She was a woman of refinement, fond of music and flowers, always happy in her work, yet interested in all good things in the community.
Besides her husband, she leaves to mourn her loss one half-sister, Mrs. Martha DONALD, several nieces and nephews, and many dear friends. To her bereaved husband the voice of sympathy and the hand of help will be extended by all who know him.
