MRS. FRANZ, 79, PASSES AWAY EARLY TODAY
Was wife of one of county's four remaining Civil War veterans

Mrs. Michael FRANZ, wife of one of Jefferson county's four remaining Civil War veterans, passed away att (sic) 4 a.m. this morning at the Iowa Soldier's Home in Marshalltown (note: in Marshall Co., IA). She was 79 years of age.

Mrs. FRANZ had entered the hospital with her husband some time ago but her condition gradually got worse with death finally being the result of a cerebral hemorrhage.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 2:30 p.m. at the Hoskins Funeral Home in charge of the Christian Science church. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery.

Mrs. FRANZ was born near Parkersburg, Virginia. She is survived by her husband, Michael, who was born Sept. 18, 1844 at Fronhophen, Prussia and is now 95 years old.

Also surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Gerhard NEBBEFELD (sic - NABBEFELD) of Ottumwa, Mrs. W. H. FALKNER (sic - FAULKNER) of Fairfield, Mrs. Julian BROWN of Mountain View, Missouri, and Mrs. Ralph SALTS of Fairfield. Another daughter, Mrs. Jasper COFFIN, preceded her in death ten years ago.

A son, Arthur FRANZ, died in Colorado in 1914. Two other children passed away in infancy. Mrs. FRANZ is also survived by a large number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.

There also is a sister, Mrs. E. J. HAWKER of West Liberty, and two brothers, George DOTSON of Kilgore, Texas and Frank DOTSON of Pueblo, Colorado, who survive.

... --Mike FRANZ has received a ten day furlong (sic - furlough) from the Soldier's hospital at Marshalltown and is visiting at the home of his daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph SALTS. Mr. FRANZ accompanied the body of his wife from the hospital last week. He with Mrs. FRANZ were taken to the hospital about a month ago. It is reported that Mr. FRANZ's health is somewhat improved and he is able to be up and asound (sic) quite a little bit. ...

Note: Buried in Lot Old.P.140. She was born August 10, 1859. Husband Michael died in 1945, being the last Civil War Veteran in Jefferson County, and was buried with her.
