After a Brief Illness.

Mrs. John B. FOOTE died in this city Sunday, after an illness of a little more than a week, from pneumonia. Her remains will be interred this afternoon, Rev. J. F. Magill having charge of the funeral services. Mrs. FOOTE was in the seventy-ninth year of her age. She and her husband were pioneers of Jefferson county. Their home before removal to this city was in Buchanan township, and no woman in that community was more active in good works, in church our out, or was held in higher esteem than Mrs. FOOTE. Old friends and neighbors will very generally sorrow at her death. Her aged husband survives her, and she has three children who make their homes in this city -- Amos and J. W. FOOTE and Mrs. E. A. OBITUARY.

Editors Ledger:--Mrs. Mary E. FOOTE, wife of J. B. FOOTE, died in this city March 3d, 1901 (sic - March 4th). Mary E. HARPER was born March 29th, 1822, near Shade Gap, Huntingdon county, Penn., where she grew to womanhood. She was the youngest of a family of six children, all of whom are gone before her. From a little child she was taught the scripture and the beauty of a life bidden in Christ. At the age of thirteen she made a profession of her faith and united with the Presbyterian church, of which she had been a consistent member for sixty-six years. In 1853 she was married to John B. FOOTE, and in 1854 they came to Iowa, locating a mile north of Salina, where they lived until about thirteen years ago, when they moved to this city. Always of a quiet, gentle and unassuming disposition, Mrs. FOOTE had no ambition to shine in social circles, but in her own home the beauty and sincerity of her life were evident to all who came within its walls. Those who were privileged to know her friendship will carry with them the memory of a gracious, sweet souled woman. As wife and mother she had few equals. Of her it might well be said, "The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her," and most truly do her children "rise up and call her blessed." Looking back they date their christian lives as beginning with the teachings received at their mother's knee in early childhood. She was a woman of prayer, and early taught her children the need and the blessedness of praying often. Speaking not long ago to one of her children who had come to her for counsel and advice, she said, "I don't want you to follow my wish alone, but I do want you to be guided in this matter and all others by our God, so make it a subject of prayer." She often said "God has been very good to me in sparing my life so many years." About fifteen years ago she had a severe attack of rheumatism which left her badly crippled, and from which she has always suffered, but she bore her pain without complaint and even those nearest her knew little of what she really did suffer. February 24th she was stricken with her last illness, but even then her strong will kept her up and not until the following Wednesday did she take her bed. She realized thiat sickness might be "unto death," and during her illness expressed herself as satisfied to go or stay, "just as God pleases," only desiring that he might spare her life if it be his will until her daughter came. She was very patient and uncomplaining. Her death was like her life, quiet and peaceful. Those who stood at her bedside and watched her passing into that better, fuller life realized that for her death had indeed been robbed of its sting. "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord; they rest from their labors and their works do follow them."

Mrs. FOOTE is survived by her husband and three children, Mrs. E. A. BOWEN, Amos A. and J. W. FOOTE, all of this city. One daughter, Mrs. W. T. MACHESNEY, passed away several years ago, and one son, J. G. FOOTE, about two months ago.
