LaRue Jane FLEIG

LaRue Jane FLEIG, 98, of Nelson Nursing Home, died at 9 p.m. Thursday, June 5, 1997, at Jefferson County Hospital.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Raymond Funeral Home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Open visitation begins at noon Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials have been established to the Nelson Nursing Home activity fund or the Order of Eastern Star.

Mrs. FLEIG was born March 19, 1899, at the family farm four miles north of Fairfield, the daughter of Laurence Louis and Phoebe Jane FARRELL (sic - FERRELL) FISCHER. She married Leonard Franklin FLEIG on Aug. 25, 1924, in Oskaloosa. He died Oct. 3, 1958 (sic - Oct. 4th). A lifetime area resident, she graduated from Fairfield High School in 1917. She was a rural school teacher for many years in Jefferson and Johnson counties, and a substitute teacher in the Fairfield schools. She graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College and was a charter member of the Jefferson County Retired Teachers Association. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and had served on the Jefferson County Hospital Board of Trustees for 25 years and was board chairwoman during the expansion of the old hospital. She was a lifelong member of the Pleasant Grove Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons; Milburn and Merrill, both of Fairfield; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one son, William Laurence; one brother, Robert F. FISCHER; one halfbrother, Carl H. FISCHER; and one grandson.
