FUNERAL OF ELMER FLEAGLE WAS HELD THIS AFTERNOON

Funeral services for the late Lieut Elmer E FLEAGLE were held this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, from the J. H FLEAGLE home, 404 South Sixth street, conducted by Dr. C. L. Tennant(.) The American Legion Post attended in a body, and had charge of the services.

Elmer Edward, the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. FLEAGLE, was born at Elmwood, Neb., Nov. 23, 1891(.) His parents came to Fairfield and took up their residence when he was but an infant, and he grew to manhood in this city(.) He graduated from the Fairfield High School with the class of 1913, this being the first class from the new building. He was united in marriage to Bertha GREESOM (sic) of this city Sept 25, 1915. He was a member of the I.O.O F. lodge and the Methodist church at Cedar Falls.

In the passing of First Lieutenant Elmer E. FLEAGLE this community sustains a distinct loss, and the State the loss of a real soldier. he answered the last roll call in the very prime of life, being only twenty-eight.

Now that he is gone it may be remembered that he gave ten years of that time to the service of his country, three years in active service(.) The members of his old command will attest the fact that he was a dominant, active and aggressive character. A captain and leader in football, he trained and led his plattoon (sic) in the same way. Any enterprise in his charge was sure of active exploitation. His code in the army was to answer all orders with obedience and accomplishment.

He enlisted in Company "M" in 1908, became its First Sergeant in 1914. Was mustered into Federal service June 28th 1916 and served at Brownsville, Texas, with his command where he was promoted to Second Lieutenant(.) He entered the Worlds War (sic) in the same rank and Company, leaving Iowa for Camp Cody, Deming, New Mexico, Sept 27th, 1917, his company then becoming a unit in the 34th or Sandstorm Division(.) His aggressive personality soon brought him the attention of superior officers and he was appointed Bayonet Instructor for the 3rd Batallion 133d Infantry and in recognition of meritorious services in that connection he was in 1918 promoted to First Lieutenant. He sailed for France with his company from Hoboken on Oct. 12, 1918, landing at Le Harve, France, on Oct. 28th. His service while in France was in the vicinity of Le Mans and Alencon. He returned to the United States on March 27th, 1919, and was discharged from the service at Camp Dodge, Iowa, April 12, 1919.

His death at Cedar Falls, Iowa, May the 7th following an operation for appendicitis causes genuine sorrow and regret among his comrades and associates, and their sympathy goes out to the young wife, terribly stricken in the hospital at Cedar Falls(.)

Not every man may have so done his full duty and be ready for taps at twenty-eight(.) May eternal peace be his(.)

DEATHS

FLEAGLE, ELMER EDWARD--At hospital in Cedar Falls, on May 7, of appendicitis, aged twenty-eight years. His illness was of but a few days duration and his sudden death came as a severe shock to Fairfield relatives and friends. Additional cause for sadness is found in the fact that his wife is also ill in the hospital and was unable to be with him in his last illness or to attend the funeral services.

Mr. FLEAGLE was a valued member of Company M and gave excellent service as a soldier during the late war. He was a young man of fine character and had the confidence and respect of all who knew him. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. FLEAGLE and made his home in Fairfield with his uncle, W. H. (sic - J. H.) FLEAGLE.

The body was brought to Fairfield for burial and funeral services were conducted at the home of J. H. FLEAGLE May 10 in charge of the American Legion.
