TOM FENTON DIES AFTER STROKE TODAY
Well known local resident was veteran of World War I

Tom FENTON, 59, well known Fairfield man and resident of the Bonn hotel died at 1:30 a.m. today in the hotel lobby following a stroke. He was born in Lexington, Ill. on Oct. 26, 1881 (sic - 1878) and came to Fairfield before the World War. He would have been 60 years old Sunday.

He has two brothers, William and Thomas in Bloomington and Lexington, Ill. Funeral arrangements are pending their arrival in Fairfield.

When Mr. FENTON first came to Fairfield he was employed as a teamster for the Blunk Construction company.

When he enlisted in the United States Army during the War he was made a stable sergeant and served in France. He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans organization.

Last year Mr. FENTON suffered a stroke and had been a resident of the Bonn hotel since that time. Several days ago he complained of not being well. He developed a cough and last night was ill when he went to bed. About 1 a.m. today he got up, went down into the hotel lobby and secured a drink of water.

A few minutes later he became worse and a doctor was called. When the doctor arrived he called for an ambulance. Mr. FENTON died before the ambulance arrived.

His body was removed to the Murray funeral home in Fairfield. No relatives survive in this community.

For many years he was a horse buyer in Jefferson county. He drove the Fairfield fire truck for 11 years during the time when it was horse-drawn and motorized. In 1930 he was appointed custodian at the Fairfield post office. He served in that position until he incurred the stroke about a year ago.
