Insurance agency founder EVANS dies

Lyman T. EVANS, who operated an insurance agency in Fairfield for more than 50 years, died at 1:20 p.m. Tuesday, July 5, 1988, at Jefferson County Hospital.

EVANS, 80, of 905 S. Second St., was president of the L. T. Evans Insurance Agency, which he started in August 1934 after moving to Fairfield.

EVANS was born June 18, 1908, in Grinnell, the son of William and Pearl SPANGLER EVANS. He grew up in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School. He also attended Gem City Business College in Quincy, Ill.

He married Camilla K. DARE on Nov. 2, 1933, in Grinnell. She died March 9, 1983.

Starting in 1934, he was first a trustee and later an elder of the First Presbyterian Church.

EVANS was strongly involved in the community. He was a past president of the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce, a past president of the Fairfield Rotary Club, a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Fairfield Golf and Country Club, Kaaba Shrine Temple and Masonic Clinton Lodge No. 15.

He was a director of the First National Bank for 20 years and served on the board of the Jefferson Savings and Loan Association for 30 years. He was a director of the Cedar Rapids-based United Fire and Casualty Company. He also was a trustee of the Shining Trail Council of the Girl Scouts of America.

EVANS is survived by his son James L.; his daughter Susan K. PHIPPS; four grandchildren; three sisters, Florence TEW of Grinnell, Irene WALKER of California and Louise AGNEW of Grinnell.

In addition to his wife, EVANS was preceded in death by two brothers, Willis and Russell. A sister, Mary GREY of Des Moines, died Tuesday night at a nursing home in Norwalk.

The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Richard Wallarab officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, with Masonic rites at the graveside conducted by Clinton Lodge No. 15 A.F. and A.M.

Friends may call at Raymond Funeral Home. Memorials may be left to the Greater Jefferson County Foundation, First Presbyterian Church or the Iowa Heart Association.
