WM. M. DOWNEY DROPPED DEAD
Proprietor of Fairfield Hotel Passed Away In Coal Shed From Heart Failure

William M. DOWNEY, proprietor of the Fairfield hotel, 401 North Sixth street, was found dead in a coal shed at the rear of their lot yesterday afternoon about 1:30 oclock about ten minutes after he had passed away from heart failure. Two months ago he had been ill with the flu and had never regained his former strength, but otherwise had been feeling about as well as usual.

Mr. DOWNEY was the son of Dr. and Mrs. E. G. DOWNEY, and was born at Abingdon July 4, 1850. He was married to Emma YODER 31 years ago in Eldon, who survives him. He is survived by the following children from his first marriage: Edgar DOWNEY, Edwin DOWNEY and William DOWNEY of Ottumwa and Mrs. A. J. BOYD of this city. A daughter, Mrs. Ethel NEICE has preceded him in death and a son Clarence E. DOWNEY was lost during the world war and has never been heard from. He also leaves three sisters and two brothers: Mrs. Thomas MOORE of Centerville; Mrs. Frank BLYTHING of Topeka, Kansas; Mrs. Lucretia DEPUTY of Long Beach, Calif.; James DOWNEY of Moulton and John DOWNEY of Stillwater, Okla., besides a half-brother Archibald DOWNEY of North Dakota.

Funeral arrangements will not be made until relatives from a distance are heard from.

WILLIAM M. DOWNEY FUNERAL TOMORROW

The funeral services for William M. DOWNEY, who died of heart failure Wednesday afternoon, will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 oclock from the home, 401 North Sixth, in charge of Rev. R. W. Polly (sic - R. H. Polly) of the Christian church. Burial will take place in Evergreen cemetery.

WILLIAM M. DOWNEY BURIED YESTERDAY

Funeral rites for William M. DOWNEY, who passed away very suddenly Wednesday afternoon, were held yesterday afternoon at two oclock from his home, The Fairfield hotel, 401 North Sixth street. Rev. R. H. Polly of the Christian church conducted the services. The remains were interred in Evergreen cemetery.

WM. M. DOWNEY

William M. DOWNEY, son of Dr. and Mrs. E. G. DOWNEY, was born in Abingdon, Iowa, July 4, 1850, and departed this life at Fairfield, Iowa, March 21, 1923.

He was united in marriage to Emma YODER, 31 years ago. He made his home in Eldon for some time, thence moving to Fairfield where he has been proprietor of the Fairfield hotel for several years where he has made many friends.

Besides his wife he is survived by the following children, from his first marriage: Edgar, Edwin and William DOWNEY of Ottumwa, Iowa and Mrs. A. J. BOYD of Fairfield. A daughter Mrs. Ethel NEICE, preceded him in death and a son Clarence E. DOWNEY, was lost during the world war and has never been heard from. He also leaves three sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Thomas MOORE of Long Beach, Calif., James DOWNEY of Moulton, and John DOWNEY of Stillwater, Okla., besides a half-brother, Archibald DOWNEY of North Dakota.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon by Rev. R. H. Polly of the Christian church. Interment was made in Evergreen cemetery.
