Mr. DOWNARD was born in Pennsylvania and the past 21 years of his life has been spent in this city. Many of his friends extended congratulations to him on that day.

Funeral Arrangements Will Not Be Made Until Relatives Are Heard FromJohn H. DOWNARD, a well known civil war veteran of this city, passed away today at 11:45 oclock at his home, 301 West Burlington, after an illness of several weeks.
Mr. DOWNARD had just celebrated his eighty-first birthday last Friday. He was born in Pennsylvania and for the past twenty-one years has made his home in this city. Besides his sorrowing wife he is survived by the following children: Ray DOWNARD of Ledore, Mont.; Howard DOWNARD of Michigan and Claude DOWNARD of St. Louis, Mo.
The funeral arrangements will not be completed until relatives from a distance are heard from.

The funeral services for John H. DOWNARD, who died Monday noon were held this afternoon at 3:30 oclock from the home, 301 West Burlington. Dr. W. E. Parsons officiated. The members of the G. A. R., of which he was a member, attended the funeral in a body. Interment took place in Evergreen cemetery. Edmund Hunt, Carroll Keesey, Dr. Chester Fordyce, Leslie Pumroy, Glen Peebler and Charles Ireland, members of the American Legion, acted as pall-bearers.

Front Page, Column 7JOHN H. DOWNARD, CIVIL WAR VETERAN, DEAD AT EIGHTY-ONE
John H. DOWNARD, one of the well-known Civil war veterans of Fairfield, passed away Monday forenoon about 11:30 o'clock at his home, 301 West Burlington street, after an illness of about seven weeks, which had its beginning with flu. It was not generally known that his condition was so critical and his death was something of a shock to his many friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at three o'clock at the residence, and were in charge of Rev. H. Sears Thomson, of the First Presbyterian church. Interment was made in Evergreen cemetery.
Mr. DOWNARD was born in Pennsylvania, March 23, 1842. He served faithfully during the Civil war and was oneof (sic) the honored members of George Strong Post, G. A. R., of this city. He had made his home in Fairfield for over twenty years and was well known here. Surviving him are: His wife an dthree (sic) sons, Ray DOWNARD, of Ledore, Mont.; Howard, of Lansing, Mich., and Claude, of St. Louis, Mo.
