Grant U. DOWELL, 56, Fairfield businessman for the past 26 years, died suddenly at 1:30 a.m. today at the Jefferson County hospital.
DOWELL was owner and operator of the Dowell Shoe Repair shop. He entered the hospital about 4 p.m. Tuesday after suffering a heart attack a short time earlier. He resided at 110½ N. Main Street.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the First Christian church. The Rev. Donald Eagle, Des Moines, former local pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. The body is at the Raymond Funeral home.
DOWELL was a Republican candidate for the Jefferson county board of supervisors in the November election. He defeated two opponents for the 1963 term in the June primary vote.
Wendell Baker, county Republican chairman, said the central committee will meet at some future date to nominate a new candidate for the office.
Park Board
DOWELL was a member of the Fairfield park board. He also served on the Fairfield city council from 1942 to 1946. He was a member of the Christian church.
DOWELL was born March 1, 1906 at Bedford, the son of Joseph and Viola ALLISON DOWELL. He was reared and educated in Bedford. He was married to Mary McMASTER March 19, 1928.
DOWELL entered business in Fairfield in 1935, moving here from Mt. Pleasant.
He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Less COCHRAN, Whippany, N.J.; and Mrs. Larry GARRETSON, Fairfield. Also surviving are five grandchildren and the following brother and sisters: Irwin DOWELL, Diagonal; Mrs. Jack BEAVER and Mrs. Lela SNYDER, both of Bedford. One brother and his parents are deceased.
