MRS. MARY OLIVE DOUGHTY
Mrs. Mary Olive DOUGHTY, daughter of Abraham and Nancy BRADSHAW STANFORD was born on the old Stanford homestead in Cedar township, Nov. 3, 1848 and died at her home, 303 South Court St. March 13, 1941, having reached the ripe old age of 92 years, 10 months and three days (sic - 92 yrs, 3 mos, 10 days). She was one of the pioneer residents of Jefferson county and spent most of her life here.
During the depression following the Mexican war, she was deprived of the schooling the modern girls of today enjoy, and being one of the older ones of a family of eight children, she not only had to care for her younger brothers and sisters but also help in the garden and even in the field, and spinning in the evenings kept her busy until bed time.
She was married to H. C. DOUGHTY (sic - Calvin Hayden DOUGHTY) in 1868, who preceded her in death Nov. 23, 1923 (sic). Surviving her are her one adopted son M. T. DOUGHTY of this city, five grandchildren and three great-grandchidlren, and one brother, A. L. STANFORD of Fairfield.
She had been a member of the Free Methodist church for several years and was a woman of strong religious feeling, kindly and sympathetic to all with whom she came in contact. At times she felt she had outlived her generation and felt lost in the hustle and hubbub of today. She will be sadly missed by her many relatives, old neighbors and friends, who showed their love and appreciation by the many flowers heaped upon her casket.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 from the Hoskins funeral home with Rev. Fine of Burlington in charge, assisted by Rev. Chitty pastor of Free Methodist church of this city and tenderly laid to rest in the family lot in Evergreen cemetery, pallbearers being T. B. Short, Leslie Zillman, Ernest Peasley, Arthur Hisel, Wayne Harris and Lloyd STANFORD.
