OBITUARY

BERNARD DIERS

Bernard DIERS was born in Germanville, Iowa, May 29, 1862 and passed to his eternal reward just before noon Wednesday, Jan. 24 at his home at 205 W. Washington street in this city. He would have been 78 years of age on his next birthday anniversary. He was one of nine children born to Peter and Katherine BELL DIERS, only seven of whom grew to maturity.

Mr. DIERS had been in his usual good health and spirits on Tuesday. In the afternoon he walked to town as he was accustomed to do and spent a few hours with his friends. While he was preparing to retire Tuesday night he suffered a stroke which proved fatal in about twelve hours.

Mr. DIERS was baptized in infancy and confirmed in the Germanville Lutheran church March 21, 1875. He received a common school education and grew to manhood in the community where he was born.

On March 6, 1890 he was united in marriage to Anna Elizabeth MESSER. Four children were born to them, two sons having died in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. DIERS spent nearly 30 years farming in the upper Richwoods community. In 1919 they retired from farming and moved to their present home in this city. Since moving to town he has done some carpenter work because he preferred to be busy rather than idle, and he enjoyed doing that type of work.

Mr. DIERS was a man of many admirable qualities. He was thrifty industrious and honest. He was respected and admired by the entire community where he has always been a good citizen. His neighbors will remember him for his genuineness of character. He was a faithful and loving husband, a kind and devoted father.

He is survived by his faithful wife, and two daughters, Mrs. Eva COULTER of Iowa City and Mary, who teaches in Waterloo; two grandsons, Dwight and Donald COULTER; two brothers, Henry DIERS of Fairfield and Frank DIERS of East Pleasant Plain, a number of nieces and nephews and other more distant relatives.
