Two Found Dead In Car; Carbon Monoxide Blamed

LIBERTYVILLE -- Dr. C. F. Watson, Jefferson County medical examiner, has ruled that two persons found dead in a parked car near Libertyville shortly before noon Monday died of carbon monoxide poisoning. He ruled their death as accidental.

The victims were Kenneth L. DENNEY, 21, Fairfield, and his cousin, Ava D. DENNEY, 25, Libertyville.

Following his investigation the medical examiner also said there was no suspicion of foul play.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's office received a call at 11:10 a.m. Monday from Libertyville stating a passing motorist had observed a car off the road, that it apparently had been there for several hours, and it also appeared as if there was a man inside the vehicle.

County officers responded to the call and found the two victims in the car. The vehicle was parked in a field one mile west of Libertyville and one-half mile north.

Officers said the car had been parked at that location for some time since there were no tracks in the mud as result of the Sunday rain. Time of death was placed at approximately 2 a.m. Sunday.

Reports also said the key was in the ignition switch at the 'on' position, and that the gas talk was empty, indicating the car's motor had continued to operate until the gasoline supply was exhausted.

The cause of death was ruled as asphyxiation due to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Double funeral services wil be held Thursday, Nov. 14, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Fairfield with Father Louis Leonhardt officiating.

Interment for Ava Delores DENNEY will be in Maple Hill Cemetery at Birmingham (note: in Van Buren Co., IA); and Kenneth L. DENNEY will be laid to rest in Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield.

Prayers for a Christian Wake for both the accident victims will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, at the Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield.
