E. H. DEMPSEY DIED TODAY
Resident of Fairfield for 28 years

E. H. DEMPSEY, 77, formerly employed at the Cable Lumber yard, passed away at his home, 302 N. Fifth street, this morning at 4:30 o'clock. He had been ill for the last year, but his condition was not serious until three weeks ago.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday afternoon January 7 at 2:30 p.m. from the Methodist church in charge of Dr. M. A. Gable. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery.

Mr. DEMPSEY came to Fairfield 28 years ago from Parsons, Kansas. He had worked at the Cable Lumber yard for 18 years, retiring ten years ago. He was a faithful member of the Methodist church and was active as an officer or member of the Brotherhood Bible class as long as his health permitted him to attend.

Mr. DEMPSEY was affiliated with the Masonic lodge for more than 50 years.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Mrs. Mary DEMPSEY, three sons and six daughters. The sons are John DEMPSEY, Fairfield; Thomas DEMPSEY, Patterson, California; Karl DEMPSEY, Ft. Madison. The daughters are Mrs. L. N. NEWLON, Fairfield; Mrs. Frank HARR, Rolla, Mo.; Mrs. R. A. OATS, St. Louis, Mo.; Mrs. Lane STANSBERRY, Ft. Madison; Mrs. Ed PADGETT, Fairfield; and Mrs. Gladys THACKER, Sperry, IA.

OBITUARY

E. H. DEMPSEY

Emert Heddington DEMPSEY was born in Fayetteville, W. Va., May 14, 1862 and passed away at his home, 302 N. 5th St. Jan. 5, 1940 at the age of 77 years, 7 months and 22 days. After graduating from college at Athens, W. Va., he accepted a position with the C. & O. railroad at Olive Hill, Ky., holding that position for twenty years.

On June 24, 1886 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Elizabeth VINCENT at Grayson, Ky. To this union nine children, three boys and six girls were born, all of whom are living and were here to attend the funeral with the exception of one son who resides in California and was unable to come.

In 1904 Mr. DEMPSEY moved to a farm north of Parsons, Kans., later he accepted a position with the M. K. & I. railroad at South Mound, Kansas. In 1914 he moved with his family to Fairfield, where he resided until his death. After coming to Fairfield he was employed for several years with the Cable Lumber Company.

He was a member and a loyal worker in the Methodist church and a member of the Masonic lodge. He was a devoted husband and a kind and loving father.

He is survived by his wife and children, 19 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. One sister, 80 years old who resides in Virginia, a half-brother who lived in Huntington, W. Va., passed away 3 months ago at the age of 95 years.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church, Sunday, Jan. 7 at 2:30 p.m. conducted by Rev. Gable. Six grandsons, Willis NEWLON, Frank HARR, Emert and Harold NEWLON, Junior STANSBERRY and Dale NEWLON were pallbearers. Ray Mulkins and Mrs. Glenn Bates sang very impressively "The Old Rugged Cross" and "No Night There." The Masons had charge of the services at the grave. Interment was made in Evergreen cemetery.

A host of relatives and friends mourn his passing.
