Herman DEDEN, who had been associated with the lumber business for approximately half a century, died this morning at the Jefferson County Hospital.
He became suddenly ill at his home, 106 Wilson Blvd., and was taken to the hospital where he died a short time after his arrival.
Services are pending at the Behner Funeral Home.
DEDEN had been a resident of Fairfield since 1937 when he came to Fairfield as manager of the Cable Lumber Co. located in the New Chicago Area.
He had previously served in the retail lumber business for four years in Minnesota, four years in South Dakota and five years at Burlington before coming to Fairfield.
When the Cable Lumber Co. closed in October, 1970, it was one of the oldest firms in Fairfield at that time. The Cable firm started from a saw mill in Davenport in 1866. The Cable firm purchased a lumber yard in Fairfield in 1897 and had been in business since.
After the Cable Lumber Co. closed DEDEN was associated with the Fairfield Lumber Co. beginning in January, 1971. He later retired.
In March of 1969 DEDEN received a citation and commendation for long and faithful service to the Retail Lumber Industry from the Northwestern Lumberman's Association.

Services are still pending for Herman L. DEDEN at the Behner Funeral Home.
DEDEN, retired lumber dealer, became suddenly ill Tuesday morning at his home, 106 Wilson Blvd., and was taken to the Jefferson County Hospital where he died a short time after arrival. Time of his death is placed at 8:28 a.m.
Herman L. DEDEN was born June 14, 1905, at Linn Grove. He was the son of Henry and Mary LOE DEDEN. His marriage to Nellie SIMS took place Feb. 3, 1934, in Gregory, S.D.
In addition to his wife DEDEN is survived by a daughter, Marijo BALMER, Hamilton, Va.; three grandchildren; a sister, Beatrice JENSON, Alexandria, Minn.; and a brother, Maynard DEDEN, also of Alexandria, Minn.
DEDEN had made his home in Fairfield for 46 years. He was associated with the George W. Cable Lumber Co. in Fairfield for 34 years. After the firm closed he was employed at the Fairfield Lumber Co. for five years.
He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Fairfield Lions Club, Elks Lodge and Walton Club.
A memorial has been established to the First Lutheran Church.

Services for Herman DEDEN will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the First Lutheran Church.
The Rev. Keith Lingwall will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home as they desire.
Memorials have been established to the First Lutheran Church or Iowa Lions Sight Conservation Fund.
DEDEN died Tuesday morning at the Jefferson County Hospital after becoming suddenly ill at his home at 106 Wilson Blvd.
