John Smith

John Smith, 57, of rural Lockridge, died Sunday, June 26, 2005, at his home.

The funeral is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at noon Wednesday with family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to District 14 ABATE (A Brotherhood Aimed Toward Education), Mount Pleasant Moose Lodge or the donor's choice.

Mr. Smith was born March 18, 1948, in Mount Pleasant, the son of Melvin C. and Marye E. Montgomery Smith. He married Bonnie Hudson. They were later divorced.

He lived his entire life in Salem and Lockridge areas and graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1966.

He served in Iowa National Guard.

He drove a semi for several years. Most recently, he owned and operated BJ's 4-Corner Tap in Lockridge.

He was a lifetime member of ABATE. He also was a member of Mount Pleasant Moose Lodge and a former member of VFW in New London. He liked motorcycling and being in the outdoors.

Survivors include his mother, Marye Sourwine of Mount Pleasant; three sons, Brad Hudson and wife Tracey of Farmington, Tim "TJ" Smith of Fort Madison and Cory Smith and wife Stephanie of Greenleaf, Wis.; one sister, Pat Shaffner of West Burlington; special friend, Elaine Ballard of Lockridge; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.
