LIFE OF MRS. BATES. Elizabeth C. Roach was born in North Carolina Oct 29 1831 and died at the home of her stepson George W. Bates, Apr. 2, 1919 age 87-5-4. While a small girl, seven years of age, her mother passed away and was followed by her father two years later. About 1851 she and her brother and the latter’s wife came to Iowa and located in Jefferson County near Salina where she spent the rest of her long life. In about three years after coming to Iowa, she was married to Judson Ball. Three children. They all passed away while very young. Mr. Ball was called home also. After about five years of widowhood Mrs. Ball married Joel D. Bates Nov. 13, 1862. Six children, 3 sons and 3 daughters: Jeremiah Bates of Salina; Mrs. Nellie Metzler, deceased; Charles Bates of Guide Rock, Nebr.; Anna Hawk of Bentonsport, Iowa; Dallas Bates of Fairfield, Iowa; Vesta Stevens of Rose Hill, Iowa. Also George Bates of Salina and John Bates, deceased, children of Mr. Bates’ former wife, whom the deceased mothered as her own.....M.E. Church, Salina. There remain 3 sons, 2 daughters, one stepson, 23 grandchildren, and 31 greatgrandchildren.....
