Clark S. CROWL, Retired Cafe Operator, Dies

Clark S. "Pat" CROWL, retired Fairfield businessman, died at 4:30 a.m. today at the Jefferson County Hospital. He had been in failing health for some time and entered the hospital Nov. 17.

He and his wife, Esther, had operated the Broadway Grill from 1947 until April, 1968, at which time they turned it over to their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John TAYLOR.

Last rites will be Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Raymond Funeral Home with the Rev. Wilson Hyde officiating. Masonic services will be in charge of Clinton Lodge No. 15. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Clark S. CROWL, 71, was born Jan. 15, 1898, at Trenton, Iowa, the son of H. Frank and Mary Elizabeth MOOREHEAD CROWL. He was reared and educated in the Trenton Community, and attended Capitol City Commercial College in Des Moines.

He was married Feb. 18, 1928, at Peoria, Ill., to Esther TAYLOR. They moved to Fairfield from Rock Island July 1, 1945 and operated the Adams Street Grocery.

On Jan. 15, 1947, Mr. and Mrs. CROWL opened the Broadway Grill at 109 E. Broadway. The family home is at 305 E. Broadway.

"Pat", as his many friends knew him, was a member of the United Methodist Church, Masons, Commandery, Kaaba Shrine, Elks and Eagles.

In addition to his wife he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. John TAYLOR, Fairfield; three grandchildren, John, Ann and Todd TAYLOR, all at home; and four brothers, Stace, Mount Pleasant; Max, Aurora, Ill.; Maurice, Denver; and Everett, New York City.

He was preceded in death by one sister who died in infancy.
