Mrs. Charlotte A. CRAWFORD passed peacefully to her eternal rest this morning about 8:30 o'clock at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ed JOHNSON on East Burlington street after a lingering illness extending over a period of several months Mrs. CRAWFORD was one of the old settlers of Fairfield and was respected and esteemed by a large circle of friends and acquaintances.
Charlotte A. SHAFFER-CRAWFORD was born in Zanesville, Ohio February 11 1838 and grew to young womanhood there.
In 1864, just forty-four years ago today, she came to Fairfield to make her home. Here she was united in marriage to James F. CRAWFORD, May 28, 1866. To them was born one daughter, Mrs. Harry MEDES who survives her mother. Mr. CRAWFORD was one of the prominent business men of Fairfield and conducted a grocery store in the building on the southeast corner of the square known as the Crawford building. It was in the flats in this building that Mrs. CRAWFORD came as a bride and this had been her home ever since until her illness necessitated a change.
March 16 (sic - 22), 1903, Mr. CRAWFORD passed away and his death was mourned by all of the older citizens of Fairfield.
No definite arrangements have yet been made for the funeral of Mrs, (sic) CRAWFORD and it is probable that the last services will not be held until next Monday.

Mrs. Charlotte A. CRAWFORD died in this city Thursday. She had been more or less an invalid for twenty years and her death at any time in months past would not have been unexpected. Mrs. CRAWFORD was a daughter of the late William SHAFFER and was born at Zanesville, O., February 14th, 1838. She came to this city with her parents September 17th, 1864, and her first night and her last night were spent on the same plot of ground, although in different buildings. She was married to James F. CRAWFORD, then a merchant and postmaster, May 29th, 1866. The husband died nere March 22d, 1903. One child survives the parents, Mrs. Harry W. MEDES of this city. Five members of this branch of the SHAFFER family are living at this time -- Mrs. Mattie S. JUNKIN and Mrs. W. E. JOHNSON of this city, Mrs. C. S. BYRKIT of Des Moines, John R. SHAFFER of Sioux City, and W. A. SHAFFER of Richland. Few women whose lives have been spent in this community have been more generally known or more highly esteemed than Mrs. CRAWFORD. A member of the Methodist Episcopal church from early womanhood, in her more active years she was closely associated with all its good works. Kindly, charitable and generous, she gave freely of her time and means to those in distress and showed rare devotion to her home and family. That general sympathy which was with her in a long illness will be followed by genuine regret at her death. Funeral services were held at the home of W. E. JOHNSON, where she passed away, Monday morning at 10 o'clock. They were in charge of Rev. C. L. Tennant.
